Sleeping Beauty vs. Gardens: Conflicting Met Gala Themes

This year’s Met Gala theme and dress code was “Garden of Time” alongside the New York Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. As explained by Vogue, “The forthcoming show has not to do with the Brothers Grimm or Disney but rather the celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile that it can’t ever be worn again — and are thus sleeping beauties in the scrupulous archives of the Costume Institute.” Additionally, the inspiration for the “Garden of Time” comes from a short story of the same title written by J.G. Ballard in 1962. Ballard also served as a contributor to Vogue. Due to the two concepts, the Met Gala carpet was filled with a range of fashion choices. Even Anna Wintour apologized for causing confusion about the Met Gala theme. If Wintour better explained the idea behind “sleeping beauties”, I believe there would’ve been more cohesiveness on the carpet.

Celebrities Who Executed the “Garden of Time” Theme

It’s evident that many stars did not understand the meaning behind “sleeping beauties.” Most people, with a few exceptions, wore the simple choice of florals. To be quite honest, florals are overdone, but some people managed to reimagine the meaning behind a garden. Additionally, some people took the idea of fairies as an elegant nod to gardens. Below are a few of the individuals who executed the theme, “Garden of Time”.

Celebrities Who Understood “Sleeping Beauties”

Originally, like most attendees of the Met Gala I didn’t understand the idea behind “Sleeping Beauties.” This theme and the exhibition is about bringing back to life pieces that have been “dead” or disappeared. Despite the meaning behind this theme, some took this as a reference to the Disney princess. As a result, they combined the idea of gardens with fairy tales. Even though they may have looked like princes and princesses, respectively, they didn’t quite understand the assignment.

There were few who truly brought back to life pieces that are true “sleeping beauties.” Below are a few of the individuals who executed the nod to the exhibition, and in some cases the theme, as well.

Evaluating the Met Gala Looks in Relation to the Theme

This year’s Met Gala theme was definitely confusing. As a result, this year’s carpet was not as exciting as previous years. Additionally, with some of the most fashionable people missing from the Gala, including Blake Lively and Rihanna, I was left wanting more. And as always, despite there being a theme, there are always people who choose not to adhere to it. There are definitely better years of the Met Gala. One could even say this year was a bit underwhelming. Hopefully, next year’s theme will make more sense and the looks will exceed expectations.
